Places of Tourist Attraction in Andaman:
Cellular Jail in Port Blair
Cellular Jail also known as the Bastille of India was built in 1896 – 1906 with bricks transported straight from Burma. This jail incorporates around 600 cells and between 1896 and 1908, the cellular jail was home to hundreds of Indian freedom fighters during the British Rule. Netaji Subash Chandra Bose hoisted the Indian National Flag near this Jail on 30th December 1943 to proclaim Independence. You will also find a Museum, an Art gallery and a Photo gallery inside the Jail open on all days except Monday. A moving Son-et-Lumiere (saga of the heroic freedom struggle) is shown daily inside the jail at 6:00 pm in Hindi and 7:15 pm in English.
Ross Island (2 km from Port Blair)
Ross Island is one of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, about 2 km east of Port Blair. It was the Administrative Headquarters for the islands, before an earthquake rocked it in 1941. The headquarters were then shifted to Port Blair. One can see remnants of an opulent past in the ruins of the church, swimming pool and the chief commissioner’s residence with its huge gardens and grand ballrooms. There is also a cemetery and a small museum managed by the Indian Navy. The museum has on display a collection of old records. The small island with its treasure of ruins in it became the hot tourists spot in the territory.
Cinque Island (39 km by Sea from Port Blair)
Declared as a sanctuary, these are enchanting islands with rare corals and under-water marine life and tropical rain forest. There is a beautiful sand bar joining the islands. It is suitable for scuba diving and snorkeling.
Havelock Island (38 km by Sea from Port Blair)
This island offers beautiful sandy beaches and lush green forest. Radhanagar Beach (Beach No.7), Asia’s 7th most beautiful sea beach, is one of the attractive destinations for the tourists in the islands. Snorkeling & scuba diving facilities are provided in many beaches like Elephant beach etc. One can enjoy quite holidays in the lap of mother nature here.
Neil Island (40 km by Sea from Port Blair)
This beautiful Island with lush green forest & sandy beaches is the vegetable bowl of Andaman. It provides an ideal holiday for eco-friendly tourists. Beautiful beaches at Lakshmanpur, Bharatpur, Sitapur & the natural bridge formations on the sea-shore are the attractions.
Barren Island (139 km by Sea from Port Blair)
This is the only active volcano in India. This island is about 3 Kms. in crater of the volcano, about half km away from the shore. This island can be visited by special boats which are scheduled by the DSS weekly. Visit is restricted to on board vessels only. Landing ashore not allowed.
Redskin Island
The Redskin Island offers the lure of underwater coral gardens and unspoiled beaches. If you are really lucky you might even end up catching a view of the dolphins merrily playing in the emerald waters of the sea. This island is a great place for swimming, scuba diving and snorkeling.
A boat departs Tues to Sun from Wandoor village to Red Skin and Jolly Buoy islands at 10 am (1.5 hrs) and returns around 5 pm. The boat should be booked in advance. It can be booked through a travel agency or your hotel.
Middle Andaman:
Baratang (105 km by road from Port Blair)
The Island has beautiful beaches. Baludera beach is one among them. Mud Volcanoes, Limestone cave & Parrot Island are the most attractions for the tourists in this Island.
Rangat (170 km by road from Port Blair)
After crossing the Baratang Island one reaches this Island which holds immense potential for tourism. One can enjoy the solitude of virgin nature & also can view the nesting of turtles during Dec-Feb season in the Cutbert Bay beach.
North Andaman:
Mayabunder (242 km by road from Port Blair)
This Island comes after Rangat, offers excellent scenic beauty & beautiful beaches. Beach at Avis Island (separate small Island travelled by local engine dingy), Karmatang beach and mangrove lined Creeks are the attractions for the tourists. This small Port Township offers immense scope for beach tourism.
Diglipur (328 km by road from Port Blair)
Known as the ‘Rice Bowl of Andaman & Nicobar Islands’, reached after crossing Mayabunder. It provides a rare experience for eco-friendly tourists. Saddle Peak (732 Mtrs.) the highest point in the Islands is located near to Diglipur & excellent for trekking. Kalpong, the only river of Andaman flows from here. Ross & Smith, the twin Islands joined by a bewitching sand bar, is travelled from Diglipur by engine dingy.
